Heritage Church of Christ had its real beginning when in 1970 three congregations in Fort Worth (Riverside, Diamond Hill, Eastridge) merged to form Midtown Church of Christ. For some 30 years the blended congregation met at a new building it built on Interstate 35W at the Yucca/Northside Drive exit just north of downtown Fort Worth. The church’s history, however, took a significant turn in the aftermath of the tornado that destroyed much of downtown Fort Worth in the spring of the year 2000. Among the buildings destroyed was the historic church building that housed both Calvary Cathedral International and its private Christian school, Calvary Academy. Wanting to be good neighbors in the face of this tragedy, the Midtown church made its facilities available first to the school, and then, to the church, so they could have a place to meet. During this same period of time, even before the storm, Midtown was dreaming of a possible move, having come to understand that God was leading it to relocate to another part of Fort Worth. When learning of this, Calvary offered to purchase Midtown’s property, and an agreement was reached in 2001. Midtown purchased land in the Heritage subdivision in north Fort Worth and in November, 2001, began meeting at Fossil Ridge High School in the Keller ISD, while construction began on new facilities in Heritage. The church officially changed its name to Heritage Church of Christ to reflect the new location. December 21, 2003, after 111 Sundays at the high school, the first services of Heritage Church of Christ were conducted at the new facilities on Heritage Trace Parkway. (Even though the building is located in the city of Fort Worth, mail service is through the Keller post office, so the church’s address is usually given as 4201 Heritage Trace Parkway, Keller, TX 76248).
